Case Study – Parvati Khatiwada

Parvati Khatiwada

Parvati Khatiwada from Itahari has been working with Reliance spinning mills for the past 8 years as a training instructor as well as a women’s colony counselor and caretaker for safety and control purposes. She said that because women in the hostel are accompanied, they come from different places, different natures and backgrounds. It is not prevalent to share a common room without any conflicts. So, I settle for comprehensive negotiations together. I am also currently employed as a training teacher, offering trainees both theoretical and practical knowledge on machine operating systems. For almost 15 years now, Reliance has had a tradition of working with women employees. Before my involvement in Reliance, they were employed here, they are almost 1600 women workers, and colony holds more than 55 rooms of 3 to 4 beds. More than 500+ women are embraced by the colony inside the premises. I do sometimes get complaints about safeguarding issues, but simple ones it doesn’t get serious. We discuss the issues with women and the man who is responsible. We take it to the management according to case-by-case; often we resolve it on their own if it is resolvable between the two parties.

I haven’t heard any significant complaints within my time, however. Women have the right to separate colonies, women’s workers, women’s guards, kitchens, electricity, water, lactation rooms, etc.Since joining Reliance, I have come across many women whose lives have changed and had an impact. She quotes: “Nikaimathipuraisakekochanafnobaalbachalaihaikamayeranai. Many were met with domestic abuse, many went through divorce proceedings, and they joined in weeping for work here. Now they’ve purchased homes for land development.

She further quotes “Hamro Nepal maihamroaaganmai yeti koudhyogdhandachalnu, rahamiyetikamahilaharulaisampannaSalibanaunu, afnokhuttaubayerakhuwaunebanunubhanekoatyantaigauravkokuraho.Hyahamibideshgayerakaamgarnebittikaigharbigrine, ninda, mahilahinsajastoawasthaharusahanuparcha, tesartha ma junawasarhamimahila le payekachau, tyoawastha ma hamidherainaikhusichau, Nepal ma yetikoudhyogdhandaharuchalnubhanekothulogaurabhkokura ho.
